Portland Chiropractor, Tim Irving, AKA "Unicycle Doc"

Hi Everyone, I'm Dr. Irving; I am a Portland chiropractor, nutritionist and as of November 2009, a unicyclist. Welcome to my Portland chiropractic, nutrition, hypnosis and functional medicine clinic, Optimum Function.

Does your chiropractor promote functional, dynamic movement?

Would you like to perform at your best no matter what you are doing...... even unicycling?

If you answered "YES" to either or both of these questions, it's time to come in and talk to me about what I can do for you at Optimum Function in SE Portland

As a chiropractor in Portland, Oregon, I constantly search for new and exciting ways to maintain my good health and stay active. Many activities that we have been told are "healthy" for us are BORING and monotenous. For me, unicycling is not only fun and great for my overall fitness, it's been the last piece of the puzzle with regards to getting rid of my back pain. After being in a near-fatal car accident in 1990, I have had near constant back pain that has only been helped temporarily by things like: Chiropractic care, manual medicine, soft-tissue therapies, Graston, Kinesiotape, cold laser and exercie therapy. Many of my patients have experienced the same thing; pain gets better with treatment, only to come back with an incidental movement, fall or minor injury. It's FRUSTRATING, I know!

Pain and discomfort are treated in my clinic in a few stages:

  • Figure out if there is damaged tissue, inflammation or other injuries and speed the healing process along
  • Find and corrrect any mobility issues
  • Get the right muscles firing at the right time under controlled and simple situations
  • Get those muscles firing during more complex and dynamic situations that mimic activities you strive to perform on a daily basis
  • To recap, why did I start unicycling?

  • To Have Fun
  • To Exercise More
  • To Reduce My Back Pain
  • To Try Something New That Challenges My Mind and Body
  • How did I start unicycling?

Well, about a year ago, a patient asked me if unicycling was OK for his back. He had a history of back pain and I was helping him with chiropractic care and Graston Therapy. After looking into unicycling, I decided that not only was it OK for his back; it was going to be the last piece of the puzzle in his low back pain rehabilitation. In addition, I felt strongly that it was going to help me as well.... the rest.... well, stay tuned for more videos on my Portland Chiropractor and Nutritionist YouTube Channel

Here's a video that goes into the history of unicycling. This is a short clip from the movie "In Unison" by Joseph Neigh
