Portland Chiropractor | High Cholesterol? Think Again….

Here’s a great article that discusses how the lowest rate of mortality (death) was seen in individuals with cholesterol levels (total) between 200-240 mg/dl. All of you who have come to see me for this take note…. remember when I told you your cholesterol wasn’t that high and you looked at me in disbelief? Who would have thought a Portland chiropractor would be the one to tell you this :)

Here’s the article: Cholesterol Levels and Mortality

New Omega-3 Blood Test Now at Optimum Function.

Have you always wondered why everyone is recommending fish oils and other forms of omega-3 essential fatty acids? Well, there’s a new test that you perform at home and send out to my lab that can test your omega-3′s and give you an omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. This information is incredibly important and is called the Omega-3 Index and you can come into Optimum Function; my Portland, Oregon chiropractic, nutrition, hypnosis and functional medicine clinic to grab your test kit and find out what you Omega-3 Index is.

Have You Checked Your Omega-3 Index?

The Omega-3 Index is the new measure of heart health.  It may be the most important number you’ll know.

The Omega-3 Index is a stronger predictor of heart disease risk than cholesterol.  Individuals with a high Index have a decrease in the relative risk for sudden cardiac death by as much as 90%!

Are you getting the right types and amounts of omegas in your diet?  How much do omega-3 you need?  What about omega-6?

Now you can check your omega scores with this convenient at-home omega 3 blood test kit which includes two important measures of omega-3s in your blood, your Omega-3 Index and your Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio, an important factor associated with chronic, whole body inflammation

Knowing your omega levels can help you proactively make changes to your diet to reduce your risk of heart disease and other conditions associated with chronic inflammation.

Taking the omega 3 blood test is easy.  Simply follow the instructions in this convenient at home test kit to collect a drop of blood and return your blood sample in the enclosed return envelope. Within about two weeks, you will receive your lab results by mail along with a customized report, explanation of results and resources to help you make and sustain changes to your diet that will positively impact your omega scores.

The cost of the test is $129.95 and this includes my evaluation and diet and/or supplement recommendations if any are needed.

Contact me at info@OptFunction.com or use the contact form to the left of this post for more information or to schedule a time to come pick up your test kit!

Eating Cold Water Fish 1x/Week Reduces the Risk Of Heart Failure in Men

In a study involving 39,367 Swedish men, moderate intake of fatty fish (cold water fish like salmon, mackeral and herring) and marine omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a reduced risk of heart failure. This study showed a 12% to 33% reduced risk of heart failure, compared with no fish consumption. The authors of this study conclude, “In this population, moderate intake of fatty fish and marine omega-3 fatty acids was associated with lower rates of heart failure.”

How to Reduce Your Chance of Heart Disease by over 80% Without Drugs

The Nurse’s Health Study is an ongoing study from Harvard of over 100,000 nurses followed for over 30 years.

What they’ve found in this Study is that here are five things that, when statistically combined, reduced the risk of heart disease bu 83%! Some of these five things are behaviors to perform and others are behaviors to avoid. They are lifestyle-related and somewhat intuitive; but here they are:

  1. They didn’t smoke
  2. They exercised
  3. They drank a moderate amount of alcohol
  4. They maintained a healthy body-weight
  5. They ate a healthy diet

If I told you there was a pill and it cost you $50 a month and you’d get an 83 percent reduction in the likelihood of a heart attack, would you take it? I’m sure you would.

No drugs, no magic pills, no nasty side effects like impotence and depression (which are common with statin drugs). Doing those five things doesn’t cost anything more what you’re probably spending on day-to-day living.

Don’t smoke, exercise, drink moderate alcohol (1-2 drinks per day max), maintain a healthy body-weight, maintain a healthy, real-food diet and you may live longer, live healthier, and quite possibly have an 83% in possible development of heart disease.

Do you need help or guidance with some of these? My optimal movement screen and treatment program can prepare you for and help guide you towards a healthy exercise regimen; don’t think you need to run miles a week or spend hours in the gym….you may not have to! The Precision Nutrition program at Optimum Function will help you learn how and when to eat certain foods….notice I wrote “foods”, real food, healthy food, not from a box or package. It can be done, you can eat healthy and it can fit into your hectic life. To find out more, go to www. OptFunction.com, email info@OptFunction.com or call 503-866-9739.

ALERT: Niacin May Effect the Liver to Raise Good HDL Cholesterol

Niacin has been touted as positiviely affecting our cholesterol ratios, but did you know this? Niacin’s cholesterol-lowering effects may by located in the liver. New research completed at the Atherosclerosis Research Center in Long Beach and UC Irvine helps to fill the gaps in our understanding of the heart healthy benefits of this important B vitamin. The research was focused on a certain component in the enzyme ATP synthase. ATP is our body’s “energy currency” without it, our cells and thus we could not survive. A subunit of the enzyme known as the ‘beta chain’ can take up and thus remove HDL cholesterol from our bloodstream. The authors wrote:

“In this report, we show, for the first time, that niacin decreases the surface expression of beta chain of ATP synthase in cultured HepG2 cells ,”

In other words, the results of this research indicates that niacin impedes the liver from removing HDL cholesterol from our blood, thus maintaining high plasma levels of HDL. High levels of HDL in our blood has been correlated to lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
