I woke up this morning and wanted to find some information that supported eating grass-fed beef, whole, non-processed foods etc. and I came across this article: Getting Real About the High Price of Cheap Food
It’s a great article about the “costs” of eating cheap food. Everything from the way gigantic pig and cow farms destroy our waterways and cause large conglomerate farms to use chemicals the quantity of which could be considered chemical warfare on our soil. To top it off, our own government subsidizes these endeavors.
One of my favorite books on this topic is The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan (Click for more info)
Another of Pollan’s books is In Defense of Food…..a must read for anyone interested in this topic.
So, what can we do to remove ourselves from this ridiculous cycle? Pay attention to the foods you buy. Make sure the meat you buy is organic and grass-fed instead of corn-fed. In and around Portland, Oregon, there are many farms that grass-feed their livestock; there are plenty of farmer’s markets and small farms at which to buy your produce. If you must go to a grocery store…. stick to the outside of the store, there is little to no real food in the interior of the store; it’s all processed beyond recognition and packaged to resemble to food it once was.
